I am taking classes with Christian Leaders Institute a free college level Christian education. The class I am in is Old Testament Survey, and I just finished studying the book of Judges and Ruth. It was a challenge, but I learned so much.
The book of Judges is where the Israelites are settled into God’s promised land. He promised Abraham that his descendants would live in the land of milk and honey. Thing is God commanded the Israelites to rid the land of people worshiping foreign gods. The Amalekites, Amorites etc. They failed to do that. The reason God wanted those people gone, even dead, is because He knew how weak the Israelites were. Just look how many times they complained about their travel to the land from Egypt. Even when Moses was on Mt. Sinai for 40 days with God. They made an idol and started worshiping it. They turned so easily from God.
Well, Israelites did not kill all the people in the promised land, so things started to go wrong. They started to worship foreign gods, marry with the other people. So, the hero’s of that time were not the best people either. But, let’s back up a bit here. God wanted the Israelites to kill everyone in those lands, women, children, men, animals, everyone! What kind of God is that? That does not sound like a loving God to me. But… lets look back to times of Abraham.
Do you remember what God said to Abraham about the land?
Genesis 15:16 16In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."
About 400 years before Abraham’s descendants reached the promised land God knew of the sinful ways of the Amorites and other peoples. God waited for them to turn to Him. God had patience, He still loved them.
Now think of times today. The people who you think are hurting people, are doing great sinful things. God allowed great sins to happen amongst the Amorites and other people groups. Sacrificing their own children to their gods, rape, and more. What about our society today? Abortions, now chaos in the streets, rape, murder. God is waiting for us to turn to Him, just as He waited for the Amorites to turn to Him. Before it is too late, we need to trust Him, to plead, cry out to Him. His hand is heavy when He knows He needs to step in to save His loyal followers.
If you look further in the story of the Israelites, God will allow the sinful people to come and conquer His people. All because they turned from Him. He uses situations, others who do not even believe in Him to bring His people back to Him. I feel it is a time to turn back to Him before times get so bad that we suffer greatly just as the Israelites have.
